The seminar “From Vulnerability to Resilience: Social Work Through the Axis of Urban–Disaster–Gender – 2209-A Project Presentations and Academic Discussions,” organized by Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Health Sciences Social Work Department, the Social Responsibility Application and Research Center, and the Gender Studies Application and Research Center, brought together academics, students, and researchers, providing a comprehensive platform for discussion.

The event began with an opening speech and framework presentation by moderator Dr. Emrah Tüncer. This was followed by a presentation from Dr. Ayşe Aydın, who examined the effects of neoliberal urbanization on vulnerability from a disaster sociology perspective.
One of the invited speakers, Dr. Selda Tunç Subaşı, Director of the Gender Studies Application and Research Center, contributed with her presentation titled “Being a Woman in the City: The Invisible Burdens of Daily Life.” Subaşı highlighted the importance of feminist geography in the social sciences and shared examples from her own field research, discussing the multilayered experiences of women in urban spaces, including invisible labor, safety concerns, accessibility, and social support needs.

In the second part of the seminar, research projects prepared within the scope of 2209-A student projects were presented. First, Sena Nur İkinci shared her study examining women’s urban experiences and social work needs in the Bağcılar district. This was followed by a project presentation by Şerife Nur Karahan and Afra Kılıç, focusing on the role of social work in earthquake preparedness, governance, and community resilience in Avcılar.

Throughout the program, the vulnerability and resilience processes emerging at the intersection of urban life, disasters, and gender were discussed in depth from a social work perspective. A question-and-answer session allowed participants to share their insights and suggestions, and the seminar concluded with a general evaluation session. The event provided a critical academic platform for discussing disaster management, urban life, and gender inequality, offering a significant contribution to ongoing research in the field.
