Dimensions of Violence against Women

On March 8, International Women's Day, Çatalca District Governorship and Istanbul Gelisim University Gender Studies Application and Research Center organized an event to say 'stop' to violence against women.

Çatalca District Governorship organized a talk with Istanbul Gelisim University as part of its action plan to draw attention to violence against women. On March 8, 2018, the program was held with the participation of Çatalca District Governor İnci Sezer Becel, Çatalca District Director of National Education Ahmet Sacak, Çatalca Deputy Mayor Dursun Duran Kaya and women.

Within the scope of the event, on behalf of Istanbul Gelisim University, Gender Studies Application and Research Center Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şükran Güzin Ilıcak Aydınalp made a presentation. In her speech, Aydınalp talked about strong women figures in history, what women's rights are, the concept of violence against women, the extent of violence in Turkey and the importance of International Women's Day.

On women's rights in our country, Aydınalp said: “In the world and in Turkey, women have the right to vote and be elected, the right to education, the right to divorce and alimony, the right to labor, the right to participate in political activities at local and national level. Although women have equal social, economic, political and legal rights with men, they still have problems in using these rights.”
Aydınalp also pointed out that violence against women is increasing day by day in the world and in Turkey. Stating that one out of every 3 women in the world is exposed to different forms of violence, Center Director Aydınalp explained that women are victimized by physical, economic, sexual and psychological violence.  Aydınalp stated that the reasons for violence against women are honor, jealousy, rejection, psychological reasons, alcohol and drug use, unemployment and lack of money and said, “Women have negative ideas about themselves, they believe that their husbands will change, they continue their marriages for reasons such as economic obligations, the child's need for a father, thinking that they cannot do it alone, believing that divorced widows are not socially welcomed.”

Aydınalp also explained that the reality of violence, rape and harassment against women in Turkey has increased 14 times in the last ten years, and said that popular TV series, programs and news today increase violence. Stating that psychologists and sociologists should play a role in the education of mothers in order to prevent violence, Aydınalp said, “People who are prone to violence should be given psychological compulsory support, criminal sanctions should be increased, unjust provocation discounts should be abolished and violence should be controlled in mass media.”
Aydınalp, who also celebrated International Women's Day, was presented a plaque and flowers by Çatalca District Governor İnci Sezer Becel after the presentation.
